SRI PANCHAMUKHA HANUMAN

SRI PANCHAMUKHA HANUMAN

Anjaneya Swamy, popularly known as Hanuman, is revered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva and embodies the essence of true devotion (bhakti). He is celebrated for his unwavering dedication, remarkable commitment to his duties, and representation of Dharma. Hanuman's life and actions illustrate the profound meaning of devotion, showcasing a model of loyalty and selflessness in service to Lord Rama. His character serves as a powerful reminder of the virtues of courage, honor, and righteousness in the face of challenges.

The consecration of the Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya Swamy idol marks a significant event, as it is the only Panchamukha Hanuman idol established in all ashrams founded by Sri Sri Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji. This idol features Lord Hanuman in his five-faced form, known as Panchamukhi Hanuman, which symbolizes various divine qualities and represents the five cardinal directions. Each face of the idol embodies distinct attributes:

  • Hanuman (East Facing): Represents unwavering devotion and purity.
  • Narasimha (South Facing): Symbolizes fearlessness and protection from evil.
  • Garuda (West Facing): Signifies swift action and protection against negative influences.
  • Varaha (North Facing): Embodies strength and prosperity.
  • Hayagriva (Upward Facing): Represents knowledge and wisdom.

The legend of Panchamukha Hanuman is rooted in the Ramayana. When Ravana captured Lord Rama and Lakshmana with the help of Ahiravana, Hanuman had to extinguish five lamps in different directions to defeat Ahiravana. By manifesting his Panchamukhi form, he was able to blow out all five lamps simultaneously, thereby rescuing Rama and Lakshmana. This act solidified his worship in this form, highlighting his resourcefulness and dedication.
